Believe! Smash and Great White Way alums Andy Mientus and Krysta Rodriguez will reprise their performances in the Deaf West incarnation of Spring Awakening when it transfers to the Main Stem this fall. 20 young actors will also make their Broadway debuts in the production. Directed by Michael Arden, Mientus' fiancé, and starring the previously reported Marlee Matlin, the revival will begin performances at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on September 8 and officially open on September 27. The limited engagement is currently set to end on January 9.
Mientus will take on the role of Hanschen. He won a Broadway.com Audience Choice Award for his performance in the recent Main Stem revival of Les Miserables; other stage credits include the first national tour of Spring Awakening. Additional screen credits include The Flash, Chasing Life and Anger Management. Rodriguez will play Ilse. As well as appearing in the original Broadway production of Spring Awakening, she has been seen on the Great White Way in First Date, The Addams Family (for which she won a Broadway.com Audience Choice Award), In the Heights, A Chorus Line and Good Vibrations. Along with Smash, her screen credits include Chasing Life, Inside Amy Schumer, Married, Gossip Girl, Wishin’ and Hopin’ and The Virginity Hit.
Also reprising their roles from the Los Angeles production are Miles Barbee, Katie Boeck, Alex Boniello, Joshua Castille, Daniel Durant, Treshelle Edmond, Sandra Mae Frank, Kathryn Gallagher, Sean Grandillo, Amelia Hensley, Lauren Luiz, Austin McKenzie, Andy Mientus, Krysta Rodriguez, Daniel David Stewart, Ali Stroker, Alexandra Winter and Alex Wyse. They will additionally be joined by swings Robert Ariza, Lizzy Cuesta, Van Hughes and Ren. Further final casting will be announced shortly.
A re-imagining of Frank Wedekind's 1891 play with music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater, Spring Awakening depicts how young people navigate the thrilling, confusing and mysterious time of their sexual awakening. The story centers around a brilliant young student named Melchior, his troubled friend Moritz and Wendla, a beautiful young girl on the verge of womanhood. This production will feature choreography by Hedwig’s Spencer Liff and be performed both in American Sign Language and English.
Spring Awakening opened on Broadway on December 10, 2006 and received eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. The Great White Way production ran for 859 performances before closing on January 18, 2009.
The Brooks Atkinson currently plays host to It Shoulda Been You, which will close on August 9.
